Graph Paper vs. Dot Grid: Which One Should You Use?

Both sheets give you a repeating unit. They just get in your way differently.

Graph paper is a full grid. Great when the square is the point: coordinate sketches, pixel art, knitting charts, “this box is 5 mm.” Heavy every fifth line and it starts to feel like engineering paper.

Dot grid keeps the same spacing but drops the lines. That’s why bullet journals and weekly logs like it — the page still lines up, but it doesn’t look like homework. 5 mm is the usual planner spacing; 7.5–10 mm if you’re writing large or mapping a week.

You can print either as PDF from the generators. Use Actual size so a 5 mm grid stays 5 mm on the page, not “whatever Fit to page decided.”
